Ray Oldenburg: The Great Good Place

About Place Making    Education

Oldenburg explores the importance of including an informal public place to our everyday lives, that is, a place that complements the home and work, a place to relax, socialise and always be welcome.

Oldenburg defines third place as:

"The third place is a generic designation for a great variety of public places that host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work."

Oldenburg states that third places are generally:

- A neutral place

- An inclusive place

- A place to converse

- An accessible and accomodating place

- A place that attract regulars

- A place that maintains a low profile

- A place where the mood is playful

- A place that becomes a home away from home
